The Sante Fe Trail was north of the railway and located between the two. East of what is now known as the Outer Belt Road was the general store owned by my father and my mother's brother, George Jackson Ward, and managed by Uncle George who was the first station agent and post master of Levasy. This store, a one room frame building, was built before the railway was put through and was afterward remodeled. Later a new store building was built farther east, and the old building used as a dwelling by Uncle George's family. Father afterward sold a small tract to the McCrew Milling Co. and there is still a small triangular tract east of that which has never been transferred by our family. Our home was on the hill south of the Fire Prairie Creek and about a half mile south of the Old Trial. In 1883 father sold the farm to Mr. John Wallace and bought a farm four and a half miles northeast of Independence where the family lived until after his death, September 17, 1989. (This is an excerpt from "My Most Interesting Ancestor" written in 1961 by Mrs. Marvin Maxfield, a direct descendent of William Wallace Livesay. The stories are based on notes left by Margaret Livesay Morrison, daughter of W. W. Livesay. This manuscript is in the archives of the Jackson County Genealogical Society at the Truman Courthouse, Independence, MO.) ******** HISTORY OF JACKSON COUNTY LEVASY This little village is about a mile west of the Lafayette county line, on the Narrow Gauge Railroad. George Ward built the first business house in the town, and commenced merchandising in 1876. The next store was built by James Wasson, in 1877. The third store about the year 1877. At present time there are the following business firms: *column 1* General store, J. G. Ward Grocery store, John Hightower Drug store, John Suddeth Blacksmith, Peter Rife Physician, C. A. Paxton Physician, W. J. Gardner *column 2* Physician, Dr. Henderson Teacher, C C. Lattimer Mo. Pacific depot, J. G. Ward Post-office, J. G. Ward, P.M. Justice of Peace, N. N. Burnley -- Blank Page -- BUS TOUR - FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2001 LIVESAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY There will be five stops. To facilitate getting off and on the bus, please start debarking first with right side of aisle, followed by left side. Then, at following stop, first w ith left side of aisle, followed by right side, alternating at each stop until end of tour. First stop will be Salem Cemetery . DeWitt Shrout will meet us there to tell about how he and his twin brother dug graves for many years. They both farmed with John Strother Livesay, and even though past retirement age, are still farming. They are native sons having lived their entire lives here in this county. Upon arrival at Salem Cemetery, everyone should congregate near the bus in order to meet DeWitt. He will tell us of his experiences not only digging the graves for every burial, but for many Livesay ancestors, whom they knew and farmed with. We w ill have read a few words from Jim Livesay, our LHS founder, and then will place flowers on the graves. (Warning: Please be careful when walking among the graves as there are some uneven places where one might turn an ankle.) Our second stop will be at the little village of Levasy , hardly large enough to be called a town. We will be there only for a few minutes, just long enough to snap a few pictures and enjoy visiting with others on the tour. Our third stop will be Arnold Cemetery . Again, we will have read a few more words from Jim Livesay, and then place flowers on the graves. Our fourth stop will be for lunch at the Shelter House at Hayes Park near Fort Osage. Since the Shelter House seats only about 40, we will divide up with half eating first, while the rest tour the Fort with an interpreter. Then the groups will change places. Our fifth and last stop will be at the Trails Museum . We will see a film which starts on each half-hour. We will tour the Museum and the Gift Shop. All other places on the itinerary will only be pointed out with comments by the guide without stopping. You will then be oriented and can stop back on your own time to visit some of the attractions, if desired. We are hoping that each one completely enjoys the bus tour and the lunch. There is a restroom on board. Please notify the guide at once if you have any problem or emergency. -- Blank Page -- Blank Page -- Blank Page -- Blank Page -- Back Cover --
